The Career
Pat Jennings is one of football’s true greats, a legendary goalkeeper whose career spanned over two decades at the very highest level. Born in Newry in 1945, he played more than 1,000 senior games and earned 119 caps for Northern Ireland, a national record at the time. Jennings made his name with Tottenham Hotspur between 1964 and 1977, winning the FA Cup, two League Cups and the UEFA Cup, and famously scoring from a drop-kick in the 1967 Charity Shield. He then crossed North London to Arsenal, where he added an FA Cup winners’ medal in 1979 and reached a European final, before returning briefly to Spurs ahead of the 1986 World Cup.
On the international stage
Jennings represented Northern Ireland at the 1982 and 1986 World Cups, bowing out of the game against Brazil on his 41st birthday. His consistency, longevity and humility made him one of the most admired figures in football, recognised with the FWA Footballer of the Year, PFA Players’ Player of the Year, and honours from MBE to CBE. Today he is celebrated not just as a Spurs and Arsenal icon, but as one of the greatest goalkeepers the game has ever seen.
