Joseph Lee (British, 1901-1975) ''PATHETIC AIN'T IT? ALL TRYNG TO DEFY ANNO DOMINI - JUST BECAUSE ONE OLD 'UN DID SO MAGNIFICENTLY AT WIMBLEDON'' signed, pen and ink with blue wash, an original artwork for a cartoon published in the London Evening News, Saturday 3rd July 1954, p.5; sold with a copy of the newspaper showing the cartoon, 45 by 27cm., 17 3/4 by 10 1/2in. Footnote The cartoon is a reference to to Jaroslav Drobny's triumph the previous day when he finally won the Gentlemen's Singles Title at the age of 32 beating the 19 year old Ken Rosewall 13-11, 4-6, 6-2, 9-7.
