A racing plate worn by Ossory when finishing second in the 1888 Eclipse Stakes, nailed to a tin backboard inscribed 1888, OSSORY, 2ND IN, ECLIPSE STAKES, £500; sold with a horse brass commemorating Pinza's Coronation Derby win, 1953 (2) Ossory was a chestnut colt foaled in 1885 by Bend Or out of Lily Agnes making him a full-brother to the legendary Ormonde, foaled two years earlier. He finished second to Orbit in the third running of the Eclipse Stakes in 1888, giving the Duke of Westminster a first and second in the race. This probably explains the unusual practice of preserving a runners-up racing plate. Career victories included the Criterion Stakes & The Royal Post Stakes at Newmarket, the Prince of Wales's Stakes and a dead-heat in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot & York's Great Yorkshire Stakes.
