A rare Parian figure of a young footballer by Bates, Brown - Westhead, Moore & Co., circa 1860, the schoolboy modelled holding a football by its laces besides a tree stump, stump repaired, height 23cm., 9in. An identical figure is in the FIFA Collection (ex Harry Langton). The FIFA Collection book describes the boy as a footballer from Rugby School and presumably inspired by Thomas Hughes' influential novel Tom Brown's Schooldays, published about 3 years before the manufacture of this piece. The novel begins with a school football match, and ends with a cricket match.
