W H Wheeler (20th century) WINDSOR LAD WITH CHARLIE SMIRKE UP signed with initials & titled, oil over a photographic base, 19 by 24cm., 7 1/2 by 9 1/2in.; sold with an oil on board head portrait of Windsor Lad by the same artist, signed, 21 by 19cm., 8 1/4 by 7 1/2in.; and a further oil on board head portrait of a thoroughbred by Wheeler, signed, 18.5 by 14cm., 7 1/4 by 5 1/2in. (3) Windsor Lad was owned by the Maharaja of Rajpipla, trained by Marcus Marsh and ridden by Charlie Smirke. The colt won the Derby and St Leger in 1934 and recorded a total of 10 career wins including the Coronation Cup and the Eclipse Stakes.
