The tail of the celebrated race and broodmare Alice Hawthorn, mounted onto a bone-handled riding crop with a silver ferrule inscribed ALICE HAWTHORN, FOALED AT NEW PARKS, SHIPTON, YORK, 1838, DIED AT CROFT, APRIL 20TH 1861 The remarkable Alice Hawthorn, by Muley Moloch out of Rebecca, won 52 races from 71 starts and is undoubtedly one of the best racemares of all time. She was known as 'The Queen of the Turf' and highlights of her race career include victories in the Goodwood Cup, Doncaster Cup (twice), Ascot Gold Vase & Chester Cup. At stud Alice Hawthorn also left her mark. She had 10 foals including Thormanby (by Melbourne or Windhound) who won the Derby in 1860.
