Peter Beardsley's letter states that he wore this shirt v Brazil. This would be their meeting in the Umbro Cup. However, England wore red in that game which evidently escaped Mr Beardsley's. England wore white shirts in the other two Umbro Cup matches v Japan or Sweden. Another possibility is the match v Uruguay when England wore identical style shirts. Peter Beardsley wore a white No.8 shirt in all three of these games.
