A silver and gold inlay cigarette case presented to Pedro Petrone the Uruguayan gold medal winning footballer from the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924, the hinged silver case inlaid with gold bands, the gilt interior inscribed Viiia Olympiada, Los Uruguayos En Paris A Los Campeones Mundials De Foot-ball, Pedro Petrone, Paris 1924, 9 by 7.5 cm., 3 1/2 by 3 in. Pedro Petrone was one of the most famous Uruguayan players of the period, and indeed completed a magnificent hat-trick of gold medals in the 1928 Olympics and the inaugural World Cup of 1930. He was known as 'Perucho' or 'El Artillero' [The Gunner] on account of his exceptional goalscoring record. He started his playing career at Charley before moving to the top club side Nacional. He was then bought by the Italian team Fiorentina, where he ended his career.
