A group of three Victorian trophies won by the London Rowing Club oarsman J.H. Dickson, the first a two-handled glass-bottomed pewter mug, with the club's arms in raised relief over crossed oars, inscribed TWELVE OARED RACE, 1876, WON BY, J.H. DICKSON, 16.5cm., 6 1/2in. high; the second a glass-bottomed pewter tankard, the body engraved with the club's arms, Latin motto VIRES ACQUIRIT EUNDO, and inscribed LONDON ROWING CLUB, ESTD. 1856, CLUB FOURS, 12 MAY 1879, WON BY, 19cm., 7 1/2in. high; the other sporting trophy relating to J.H. Dickson's military career, in the form of a pewter tankard by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield, inscribed BALLYGUNGE C.C. ATHLETIC SPORTS, 1887, TUG-OF-WAR, WON BY CALCUTTA MOUNTED RIFLES, J.H. DICKSON, 15cm., 6in. high London Rowing Club was founded in 1856, for the purpose of winning medals at Henley Royal Regatta. This is a tradition that continues to this day, most recently with the Putney-based club winning the Thames Cup in 2006.
