An historic Rugby League winner's medal from the inaugural Challenge Cup final season 1896-97 awarded to Mark Shackleton of Batley RLFC, in 15ct. gold & enamel by Fattorini & Sons of Bradford, hallmarked Birmingham 1896, the obverse inscribed LANCASHIRE, CHESHIRE, YORKSHIRE, NORTHERN RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION, CHALLENGE CUP, the reverse inscribed MARK SHACKLETON, FORWARD, on a later chain The Batley team, known as the 'Gallant Youths', dominated the early history of the Challenge Cup winning the first two competitions in 1897 & 1898 before winning for a third time in 1901. In the first Challenge Cup final Batley defeated St Helens 10-3.
