George Arnull (19th century) THE START; THE FINISH (A PAIR) both signed & dated 1880, oil on canvas, 48 by 63.4cm., 19 by 25in. The blue and red colours seen being carried in the race are almost certainly those of Count F. de Lagrange, who was an important and successful owner during the third quarter of the 19th century. Most famously he won the Derby of 1865 with Gladiateur, as well as the Oaks of 1864 with Fille de l' Air and dead heated in the same classic with Camilla in 1876. He also won the St. Legers of 1879 with Royon d'Or.
