Reg Wootton joined the Sunday Express in 1931 and launched ''Sporting Sam'' in 1933. He was also known for the character ''Sporty'' who appeared in Knockabout Comic and Mug and Mik in The Netherlands. Most of the artwork are dated which corresponds to the publication dates in the newspaper.
