A glass tumbler possibly Newcastle-upon-Tyne circa 1818 engraved with a portrait of the racehorse Magistrate, the cylindrical form cut with basal flutes, engraved with a racehorse and jockey in the extended gallop, and inscribed below MAGISTRATE, 10.5cm., 4 1/4in. Magistrate was a bay colt foaled in 1814 by the Doncaster Cup winner Camillus out of Lady Rachel. He was owned by Major Bower and was a stayer. Magistrate's most notable success came in the three and a half miles Manchester Gold Cup in 1818. The colt ran his last race in 1819, finishing second beaten a short-head in the four mile Great Subscription Purse at York. He was later exported to Russia for stallion duties in 1826.
