Two commemorative scorecards printed on silk for Jack Hobbs' Benefit Matches of 1914 and 1919, the first with the scores of both Surrey v Kent matches, also inscribed WAR DECLARED 1914, PEACE SIGNED 1919; the second with the 1914 match and Surrey's following fixture v Yorkshire, both 26 by 30.5cm., 10 by 12in. The outbreak of the First World War disrupted the final weeks of the 1914 cricket season, and Jack Hobbs' Benefit Match had to be switched from The Oval to Lord's. Amidst all the uncertainty the game was poorly attended and the takings were poor. Surrey CCC therefore pledged to offer Hobbs a second Benefit Match once hostilities had ceased. Thus his second Benefit Game against Kent took place in August 1919.
