The winning rider's trophy for the 1962 Badminton Horse Trials, in the form of a Garrard & Co electroplated model of an eventer and rider, mounted on a two-tiered ebonised plinth with silver plaques inscribed THE WHITBREAD TROPHY, GREAT BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP 1962, WINNER, MERELY A MONARCH, overall height 14cm., 5 1/2in. This trophy was won by Anneli Drummond-Hay riding Lt. Col. T.R.L. Greenhalgh's fine three day eventer Merely-a-Monarch. The previous year they had been successful in the inaugural Burghley Horse Trials, whilst another major success came in the International Show Jumping Grand Prix in 1962. Merely a Monarch helped launch Anneli Drummond-Hay on to the International scene and was short-listed in all three Olympic disciplines. The horse was voted in a L'annee Hippique Worldwide Poll as one of the best 50 horses of the century.
