Emmanuel Mercer was a leading jockey in the 1950s who tragically died in a racing accident at Ascot in 1959. Perhaps most famously he won the inaugural running in 1952 of the Washington DC International at Laurel Park, Maryland, aboard Wilwyn after whom he named his cottage in Newmarket.
