Two original b&w press photographs of the very first game played at the Maracana Stadium, Rio de Janeiro All-Stars v Sao Paulo All-Stars, 16th June 1950, both 8 by 10in., the 1950 World Cup would start at the Maracana 8 days later, yet the first image with the match under way shows a huge section of scaffolding in amongst the crowd on the far side as construction of the unfinished roof continues; the second image portrays Angelo Mendes, the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, hoisting the Brazilian flag and declaring the 150,000 capacity stadium open, backstamps and printed captions
