Two telegrams sent to the royal racehorse trainer Richard Marsh from King George V in 1922 and from Queen Alexandra The Queen Mother in 1924, both being by the way of a thank you for birthday greetings, the first instructed from Buckingham Palace and dated 3rd June reads R. MARSH ESQ. NEWMARKET, I WARMLY THANK YOU, MRS MARSH AND THE EGERTON HOUSE EMPLOYEES FOR YOUR KIND CONGRATULATIONS ON MY BIRTHDAY, GEORGE R.I.; the second is instructed from H.M.S. Sandringham dated 1st December 1924 and reads R. MARSH, NEWMARKET, I THANK YOU AND THE EMPLOYEES OF EGERTON HOUSE FOR YOUR KIND CONGRATULATIONS ON MY BIRTHDAY, ALEXANDRA, both framed & glazed by Pretty & Co of Newmarket The 1924 Queen Alexandra telegram is poignant as this was her 80th birthday. As fate would dictate it would also be her final birthday celebration. In 1922 King George V was celebrating his 57th birthday. Richard Marsh's first appointment as royal trainer was to King Edward VII for whom he trained the winners of eight Classic races. King George V was enthusiastic about racing and owned many horses but just simply didn't seem to have the tremendous luck that his father enjoyed on the Turf.
