A portrait of Major Wingfield, the inventor/founder of lawn tennis, taken from the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News published 31st July 1875, sold with an accompanying clipping of an article from the same magazine, published barely 12 months after Wingfield had patented his new game of Sphairistike sold as a boxed set manufactured by Jefferies and retailed by French & Co., and later to become simply known as Lawn Tennis, Wingfield seen in the portrait holding a Sphairistike racket, therefore being one of the earliest depictions of this item of lawn tennis equipment.
