A large silver presentation salver inscribed to William MacLaren by the Members of the Manchester Athletics Football & Cricket Club on 21st September 1870, hallmarked London, 1868, makers mark J EBW J, formal & foliate decoration , beaded border, paw feet, diameter 51cm., 20in., approx. 3,030gr., 107oz. William MacLaren was a member of the England team who played in the world's first international rugby match v Scotland in Edinburgh on 27th March 1871. Born in Chorlton, Lancashire, in 1844, MacLaren was one of four players from Manchester FC selected for inaugural international duty. He was a three-quarter. Provenance: By family descent, the paternal great-grandson of William MacLaren.
