A hip flask commemorating the Jem Smith & Jake Kilrain fight in 1887, The screw-off lid hallmarked silver, Birmingham, 1882, the body bearing no hallmark, inscribed PRESENTED BY H.COLE TO JACK HARPER, IN COMMEMORATION OF THE OCCASION OF HIS SECONDING JEM SMITH v JAKE KILRAIN FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD, AND ?1000 A SIDE IN FRANCE, DEC 19 1887, over polishing to presentation inscription area, 16.5cm., 6 1/2in., the hip hip flask comes with a hallmarked silver drinking cup by the London maker Toulmain & Gale, with a date stamp for 1867; sold with an internet print-out of a contemporary newspaper report of the occasion which documents the presentation of this hip flask to Jack Harper for ''squiring'' Jem Smith (3) A walking stick presented to Jack Harper for the same occasion was sold in these rooms 4th November 2013 as lot 9.
