A gold winner's prize medal from the 1st Winter Olympic Games at Chamonix in 1924, in silver-gilt, 55mm., by Raoul Bénard, victorious athlete holding skates and skis, Alps with Mont Blanc in background, the reverse with French legend in 14 lines This medal was acquired from an old collection in Finland. As such it is most likely awarded to a Finnish winner and therefore to speed skating, the only events in which the nation won gold. Clas Thunberg was the outstanding speed skater of the Games, winning gold in the 1,500 metres, 5,000 meters and the all-round competition. The Finn Julius Skutnabb won gold in the 10,000 metres.
