He played 36 tests for the All Blacks including winning the World Cup in 2011. On 6 December 2013, Afoa joined Gloucester Rugby in the English Aviva Premiership on a four-year contract worth £508,000 per season. This made him the highest-paid player in the Premiership and the third highest-paid player in European rugby.
