Phil Neal's 1981 Liverpool League Cup winner's medal, 9ct. gold & enamel, the obverse inscribed THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE CUP, the reverse inscribed WINNERS, 1981, in original fitted case Provenance: The Phil Neal Collection, Christie's, 13th September 2006, lot 175. After a 1-1 draw at Wembley, Liverpool won the 1981 League Cup by beating West Ham United 2-1 in the replay at Villa Park. Despite Liverpool FC's extraordinary success at home and in Europe the League Cup Trophy was seen as a bit of a hoodoo. They had only progressed to one final in 1978 which ended in defeat to Forest. So the win over West Ham in 1981 was something of a seminal victory and one that opened the floodgates. Liverpool recorded a hat-trick of League Cup wins by retaining the trophy in 1982 and 1983, and the club has now won the competition eight times in all, a tally more than any other team.
