A racing plate worn by Red Rum when winning his historic third Grand National in 1977, later silvered and mounted onto a brass & wooden shield with nameplate RED RUM, height 26cm.; sold with a COA signed by the racehorse trainer Ginger McCain reading THIS RACING PLATE WAS WORN BY RED RUM IN THE 1977 AINTREE GRAND NATIONAL; the lot also including Red Rum's Ladbrokes Grand National Meeting rosette (3) Red Rum is the most successful horse in the history of the Grand National. Owned by Mr Noel Le Mare, and trained by Ginger McCain at Southport, he became the first triple winner of the race in 1977. This followed victories the gelding's victories in 1973 & 1974. In the two intervening years he finished runner-up. The third win was achieved in facile fashion by 25 lengths, a winning margin that confirmed 'Rummy' was in a class of his own. After his death Red Rum was buried besides the winning post at Aintree Racecourse.
