Roger Hunt's bronze 1968 UEFA European Football Championship third-place medal, the obverse designed with a football set over a map of Europe, the reverse inscribed U E F A, CHAMPIONNAT D'EUROPE, 1968, IIIe RANG, ribbon suspension, in original Huguenin fitted case The qualification competition for the 1968 European Championship was played in two phases: a group stage, taking place from 1966 until 1968, and quarter-finals played over home & away legs in 1968. The four winning team then participated in the final tournament in Italy, these being England, Italy, Soviet Union & Yugoslavia. England were drawn against Yugoslavia and succumbed to an 87th minute goal by Dzajic. In the third-fourth place play-off England won the bronze medal by defeating the Soviet Union 2-0 through goals by Charlton & Hurst. Hosts Italy won the European title when beating Yugoslavia 2-0 in a replay. Provenance: The Roger Hunt Collection. Graham Budd Auctions, 26th April 2016, lot 827.
