The silks worn by the legendary American jockey Willie Shoemaker when winning his first race at Epsom racecourse in England aboard the R J R Williams-trained Royal Recourse in the Ashtead Stakes 9th June 1984, the plain black colours of the bloodstock agent/racehorse owner Richard Galpin, by Gibson of Newmarket, named to the owner in the neck tag; sold together with a 4 by 6in. colour photo of the finish; the lot also including a 1978 Epsom Derby racecard signed by Shoemaker who finished second on Hawaiian Sound at odds of 25-1; and a photo of Shoemaker wearing the silks on the day (4) "The Shoe" rode an astonishing 8,833 career winners and eleven Triple Crown races. Willie Shoemaker is quoted as saying the two best horse he ever rode were Forego and Spectacular Bid. Provenance: R J R Williams
