In 1986 Mikael reached the singles final at the French Open, defeating Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker and Henri Leconte en-route to the final, where he faced then world No.1, IvanLendl.
Mikael played a topspin-heavy baseline game with a double-handed backhand, like his countrymen Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander
His was a truly a crowd-pleasing game, full of variety, liberally employing the drop shot and the topspin lob
