The 1968 European Cup winner's medal awarded to Bill Foulkes of Manchester United, .750 continental gold & enamel, inscribed COUPE DES CLUBS CHAMPIONS EUROPEENS, VAINQUEUR, 1968, now housed in a custom built hinged wooden box, with red velvet lined fitted interior and engraved gilt-metal plaques Bill Foulkes was the archetypal one club footballer who made a total of 566 League appearances for Manchester United between 1951 and 1970, and only Ryan Giggs and Bobby Charlton have played more League games. Foulkes had a miraculous escape at the Munich Air Disaster suffering just a minor head injury. He took on the responsibility of captaining the side when fixtures resumed. In 1960 Sir Matt Busby switched Foulkes to the role of centre-back and this was to proved his favoured position. In the proceeding years he helped United win a F.A. Cup in 1963, a Championship title in 1966-67 before reaching the pinnacle of his career as a member of the 1968 European Cup final team that defeated Benfica 4-1 at Wembley in extra-time. Manchester United were the first English team to be crowned European Champions, following Celtic's triumph for Scotland the previous year.
