Jockey's prize for 1978 Benson & Hedges Gold Cup, York, won by Lester Piggott on Hawaiian Sound, silver gilt miniature cup, hallmarked William Collyns & Sons Ltd., 1978, engraved with small portrait of a jockey and inscribed THE BENSON & HEDGES GOLD CUP, THE RACECOURSE YORK  AUGUST 1978, WINNER, on wooden plinth, 17 by 7cm., 171gr. The Group 1 Benson & Hedges Gold Cup, inaugurated in 1972 and known today as the Juddmonte International, is the richest race run at York. In a 15 race career, US bred Hawaiian Sound won four other races and was placed in several top-class races including the Derby when he was beaten a head by Shirley Heights.Provenance: from the Lester Piggott Collection.
