John Beer (British 1860-1930, active 1885-1915), THE FINISH FOR THE DERBY 1913,gouache and watercolour, signed John Beer, inscribed THE FINISH FOR THE DERBY 1913 in the artist's hand and additionally with identifying legend of all visible finishers, mounted, framed and glazed, label to backboard The Tryon Gallery Ltd., London, overall 40 by 49cm. This was the infamous 'Suffragette Derby' of 4th June 1913, where women's rights protester Emily Davison threw herself in front of the King's horse Anmer at Tattenham Corner and died of her injuries four days later. First past the post Craganour was afterwards disqualified by the stewards for interference and the second horse, the blinkered 100-1 shot Aboyeur, pronounced the winner.
