Horace Rawlins 1895 US Open winner silver cigarette case, of rectangular form, obverse with foliate decoration and engraved HORACE RAWLINS, reverse engraved 1895 US OPEN NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND NEWPORT GOLF CLUB USGA, Birmingham 1920 by F.D., 85gm., 8.5 by 7cm., minor wear, tarnishedThe silver hallmark of 1920 would suggest that this was a 25th anniveray commermoration of Rawlins's 1895 US Open victory. Horace Rawlins (1874-1935) professional golfer, won the first US Open Championship at Newport Country Club, Rhode Island on 4th October 1895 by two strokes over 36 holes, defeating Willie Dunn. He finished second in the 1896 US Open played at Shinnecock Hills GC on 18th July. He did played on the 1897 US Open Championship, resulting in a tied eight place. Rawlins was involved in golf course design, having worked on The Springhaven Club in Pennsylvania.
