John L. Sullivan boxing flag attributed to his 1888 bare knuckle bout with Charley Mitchell, Chantilly, 10th March 1888, the 39-starred USA flag with symbols relating to Sullivan’s heritage including Irish Shamrocks and Harp, American Eagle over ribbon reading 'May He Always Be Champion' and initials J.L.S., 90 by 81 cm., folded, faded with minor holes, tear at top right corner seam, colour run John Lawrence Sullivan (1858-1918) Irish-American, known as 'The Boston Strong Boy', was the  last bare knuckle champion and first lineal heavyweight champion of gloved boxing. The Sullivan/Mitchell bout was a draw on points, with Sullivan retaining the bare knuckle Heavyweight Championship under London Prize Rules.
