Attributed to Lionel Edwards (British, 1878-1966) STUDY OF "SOLARIO" watercolour and pencil, heightened in gouache, annotations, on buff paper, 31 by 41cm., mounted, framed & glazed, overall, 59 by 69cm., good condition Solario was a fine stayer who won the St Leger, the Gold Cup at Ascot, the Coronation Cup, the Princess of Wales's Stakes and the Ascot Derby. He then became a successful stallion and sired the Derby winner Mid-Day Sun and the wartime substitute Derby winner Straight Deal; as well as the 1,000 Guineas and Oaks winner Exhibitionist and also Classic winners in Ireland. He is commemorated by the Solario Stakes, a G3 2-y-o race run at Sandown Park.
