FBM Bobby Bodmer silver South African Open Championship Best Amateur two-handled trophy, the body inscribed T G U, OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP 1939 BEST AMATEUR, marks rubbed, on circular socle base, cup 7.5in high, overall 9.5in.
Bobby Locke won the tournament this season, Bobby Bodmer and Clarence Olander both amateurs tied for 2nd place, so both were awarded the Freddie Tate cup for best amateur.
Bobby Bodmer volunteered for the South African Air Force when war was declared, he transferred as a Sergeant Pilot to the RAF and trained as a Hurricane pilot. He joined 33 squadron RAF in the western desert and was shot down and killed by the Luftwaffe on 9th September 1941.
