Rare early ball for the game of ‘Racquets or Rackets’. This ball is all original and inscribed ”Championship Racquet Match. Joe Gray vs Peter Latham. Rugby. April 20 1887. £100 a side (note: that is a huge wager for the day!). Gray won 4 to 3. Return match at Manchester April 27. Peter won 4 to love”. Peter Latham won this 1887 World Championship and also in 1888, 1891,1897, 1891 and 1902. Joseph Gray was Runner up in this year 1887 however had previously won the World Championship in 187.
