Winning Bid:
£650

That’s a wrap! We've reached the end of the auction and we’re busy tying up final bids behind the scenes. Thanks for being part of it — we’ll be in touch soon.

Clarence Hailey of Newmarket photogravure of the outstanding racehorse Sceptre and her foal Maid of the Mist,
the image 9 by 13in., framed & glazed, 46 by 57cm.

Sceptre remains the only horse in racing history to win outright four British Classics, in 1902 - the 1,000 Guineas, the 2,000 Guineas, the Oaks, and the St Leger. She was bred by the 1st Duke of Westminster in 1899 by Persimmon out of the Bend Or mare Ornament. The Duke died in 1899 and the filly was bought at his bloodstock dispersal auction by Robert Sievier for 10,000 Guineas. Sceptre won a total of 13 of her 25 races. Other important victories would include the July Stakes, St James's Palace Stakes, Nassau Stakes, Hardwicke Stakes, Jockey Club Stakes and the Champion Stakes. Her daughter Maid of the Mist, seen as a foal in this 1906 picture, won the Cheveley Park Stakes and the Nassau Stakes before becoming the dam of two Classic winners, Craig an Eran (2,000 Guineas) and Sunny Jane (Oaks).
