Caroline Wallace (20th Century): Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Burmese
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire the only other life-size bronze of Queen Elizabeth II on her beloved charger, Burmese — the companion to Sandhurst’s iconic original
A bronze that stands not only as a tribute to The Queen’s enduring partnership with Burmese, but also as a testament to British craftsmanship at its finest.
This remarkable life-size bronze by acclaimed sculptor Caroline Wallace captures Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II mounted on her favourite horse, Burmese, as seen at Trooping the Colour in 1984. The original bronze was commissioned by the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and stands proudly within its private grounds. This second — and final — casting, numbered 2 of 2, is the only other in existence. The mould has since been destroyed, ensuring that no further editions can ever be made.
A gift from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1969, Burmese was ridden by The Queen for 18 consecutive Trooping the Colour ceremonies, symbolising grace, loyalty, and the deep bond between monarch and mount. Wallace’s sculpture embodies that spirit perfectly — a masterwork of anatomical precision and emotional poise.
Caroline Wallace’s reputation for exceptional equine and figurative bronzes is well established. Following a life-changing accident, she turned her creative focus to sculpture, producing major commissions including ‘Special Cargo’ for Sandown Park, ‘Double Trigger’ for Doncaster Racecourse, and Trevor Hemmings’ Grand National winners ‘Hedgehunter’ and ‘Ballabriggs’.
This is an extraordinary and unrepeatable opportunity to own a piece of royal and artistic history — a bronze that stands not only as a tribute to The Queen’s enduring partnership with Burmese, but also as a testament to British craftsmanship at its finest.
Base of Burmese 210 x 90cm. Burmese overhangs the front of the plinth, making the total length of the sculpture (back of plinth to tip of nose) 240cm. Total width is 100cmm and height to the top of HRH's plume is 258cm.
Collection, Removal and Transport of the Sculpture would be at the expense of the purchaser
