England had reached the final having topped their group by winning all three matches, and then beat New Zealand by two wickets in the semi-final. They fell at the final hurdle, losing to West Indies by 92 runs thanks to an unbeaten 138no by Man of the Match, Viv Richards. Botham took 2/44 off his allotted twelve overs at an economy of 3.67. Batting, his innings lasted only three balls in which he scored four runs
Botham played in all five matches, ending the tournament with bowling figures of 53 overs, taking six wickets for 168 runs. His five innings with the bat returned 65 runs
