The preserved hoof of ''Pioneer'' winner of the 1846 Grand National, mounted in silver by Edgar Finlay & Hugh Taylor, hallmarked Birmingham, 1888, to form a jar & cover supported on a horse shoe and surmounted by a handle designed as a jockey cap and crossed riding whips, the hoof applied with the lettering PIONEER Pioneer was a very early winner of the Grand National, triumphing in the 8th running of the race on 8th March 1846. The race attracted a then record field of 22 runners with Pioneer, an unquoted outsider, coming home three lengths to the good under his jockey William Taylor.
