After Harry Hall (1814-1882), GLADIATEUR, WINNER OF THE 1865 ENGLISH TRIPLE CROWN, aquatint in original hand colour, engraved by John Harris, depicting the French-bred champion Gladiateur in his stall, with legend below, in a black and gilt frame, 71 by 90cm., overall, minor wear to frame corner, part missing Gladiateur, foaled in 1862, was the first French-bred horse to win the Derby. Despite regularly suffering lameness, he also won the 2,000 Guineas, St Leger, Grand Prix de Paris and Ascot Gold Cup - a record which remains unbeaten. His successes across the Channel aroused great enthusiasm in France and earned him the nickname 'The Avenger of Waterloo'. His statue today occupies a prominent place at Longchamp racecourse.
