Riding boots and breeches worn by the royal jockey John Watts when winning the 1896 Epsom Derby on the Prince of Wales's Persimmon,
in fragile condition, with family hand written label identifying the objects which also mentions the whip, which is no longer extant; sold together with ribbons in the royal racing colours from the wreath sent by King Edward VII to John Watts's funeral in 1902; the lot also including a set of pink & white racing colours with a label reading ‘J Watts Racing Colours when training 1899’; also a silk wallet in the same colour with label reading ‘father’s wallet in his racing colours, J Watts'; and two pairs of jockey riding spurs, all in a period leather case initialled E W

Lots 10 to 34 Memorabilia relating to the Royal Jockey John Watts (1861-1902) and the jockey Kempton Cannon (1879-1951). The connection between the two jockeys being that Watts's widow married Cannon. Provenance: by family descent.
