John Beer (British, 1860-1930) watercolour of the finish of the 1904 2000 Guineas at Newmarket,
signed, titled, with the first three racehorses identified including the winner St. Amant, watercolour heightened with gouache, in modern mounting & frame under glass, the image 26 by 36cm., overall 41 by 50cm.
The 1904 2000 Guineas winner St. Amant was owned by Mr Leopold de Rothschild, trained by Alfred Hayhoe on the very estate where the auction is being conducted, the Palace House Stables in Newmarket. He was ridden by Kempton Cannon as he was at Epsom when St, Amant followed up with victory in the Derby.
Lots 10 to 34 Memorabilia relating to the Royal Jockey John Watts (1861-1902) and the jockey Kempton Cannon (1879-1951). The connection between the two jockeys being that Watts's widow married Cannon. Provenance: by family descent.
