In the World Cup qualifying match against Scotland played on 25th March 1981 at Hampden Park, the teams drew the match 1-1, in the World Cup qualifying match against Portugal played on 29th April 1981 at Windsor Park, Northern Ireland defeated Portugal 1-0, in the match against Scotland played on 19th May 1981 at Hampden Park, Scotland defeated Northern Ireland 2-0 and in the World Cup qualifying match against Sweden played on 3rd June 1981 in Stockholm, Sweden defeated Northern Ireland 1-0
