That’s a wrap! We've reached the end of the auction and we’re busy tying up final bids behind the scenes. Thanks for being part of it — we’ll be in touch soon.
A silver-gilt trophy presented by the Earl of Annersley to the racehorse trainer John Scott to commemorate the notable achievement at Goodwood Races in 1860 of training his horse “Sweetsauce” to win both the Stewards' Cup and the Goodwood Cup,
the fine silver-gilt two handled cup & cover an earlier George III creation dating to 1767, hallmarked W F & I K, London, possibly chosen for the presentation from the Annersley Family Silver, height 41cm., weight 1,974gr.
John Scott (1794-1871) was a leading racehorse trainer of the 19th Century and known as the ‘Wizard of the North.’ From the Whitewall Stables in Malton in North Yorkshire, Scott trained the winners of 40 Classic winners, comprising 16 St Legers, 8 Oaks, 7 2000 Guineas, 5 Derbys and 4 1000 Guineas.
Scott's long standing record of British Classic winners was finally eclipsed by Aidan O'Brien who is currently on a tally of 48. Scott's record of 16 St Legers, however, still remains in tact.
